Maize Board of Education now seeking applicants to fill District 1 vacancy

Applications are now available for those eligible and interested in becoming an interim District 1 member on the Maize Board of Education. Applications are due by 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 29. Those interested must type their answers to the following questions on a separate page. Please submit your completed application to Maize Board Clerk Robin Brown at

Select finalists will be interviewed by board members during a future public meeting, possibly a special meeting on Monday, Dec. 6. No meeting has officially been scheduled yet. The new member could be appointed in time to assume office and serve at the next regularly scheduled board meeting on Monday, Dec. 13. Board President Dr. Jeff Jarman, Vice President Bruce Nicholson, and board member Heather Killpatrick-O’Connor will serve on a committee to review applications to help identify finalists.

The vacancy has arisen following former board member Shannon Edwards’ resignation, which she announced during the Nov. 8 regular monthly board meeting. Her resignation was effective immediately. Edwards, who was elected in November 2019, represented District 1 in the southwest portion of the school district, and her replacement will take her place for the remainder of the term, which ends on Jan. 8, 2024, according to the Sedgwick County Election Office. The seat will be up for election in November 2023. The interim member may choose to run to be elected to the position.

The interim board member must live within the District 1 voter district boundaries. Click here to access a map of school board districts. A specific geographic description and map of the District 1 boundary is available on Page 2 of the Maize Board of Education Policy, available online at Applicants also may verify which school member district they live in by confirming their voting district at

Please note that Maize USD 266 will be closed for Fall Break Nov. 22 through Nov. 26. Any applicant will be reviewed for eligibility before the application will be considered for the position.

Maize USD 266 thanks Shannon Edwards for her service to the Maize Board of Education and the OneMa1ze community.
