School board approves mask requirement for grades K-6

During its special meeting on Sept. 7, Maize Board of Education members approved a new and temporary requirement that all employees and students in grades kindergarten through 6th wear face masks during school when six feet of social distancing is not possible. This requirement began Wednesday, Sept. 8 and is in effect through the end of the day on Oct. 11. School board members may revisit next steps in the future. Face masks will be available at schools for those who need them.

The district strongly encourages all other unvaccinated students and employees to wear face masks when social distancing is not possible.

The board decision also includes the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA)’s COVID-19 Student-Athlete Return to Participation Guidelines, which can be found by clicking here.

The district continues to contend with a high number of positive COVID and high-risk close contact cases, and this change aims to reduce those numbers and keep as many students and employees in school as possible.
