2020 Summer Driver Education Canceled
April 28, 2020
Dear OneMa1ze parent/guardian:
Maize USD 266 administrators have made the decision to cancel the 2020 Summer Driver Education program that was scheduled to begin on June 1, 2020. Unfortunately, with the uncertainty of state mandates concerning COVID-19 and current social distancing guidelines, it will not be possible to complete the summer driver education program.
Although we will not be offering driver education this summer, Maize USD 266 driving instructors do suggest students go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as soon as they turn 14 to obtain a learner’s permit. Students are required to hold a learner’s permit for a full calendar year, so the sooner your child obtains a permit, the better. In order to obtain a learner’s permit, students will need to take the Kansas Driving Handbook test and pass a vision test at the DMV. The Kansas Driving Handbook can be downloaded here. Please note ALL Kansas DMV exam stations are currently closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. Check the DMV website at https://www.ksrevenue.org/dovindex.html for updates. Once students have maintained a learner’s permit for one year and have completed a driver education course, students will be able to obtain a restricted driver’s license (Graduated Driver License Requirements for Teen Drivers).
Please check e-mails sent from the district and the district website at www.usd266.com for updated information in regard to driver education offered during the 2020-21 school year and the summer of 2021. While we understand the hardship this cancellation may cause your child and family, we must prioritize the health and well-being of our students and staff members, as well as uphold the requirements and recommendations issued due to COVID-19.
